The Secession (also called "goldenes Krauthappel" by local inhabitants) is a symbol for an art movement formed in 1897 by a group of Austrian artists who refused the conservatism of the Vienna Künstlerhaus with its traditional orientation toward Historicism. In keeping with the motto – "To every time its art. To art its freedom" – besides the famous Beethoven Frieze of Gustav Klimt, the Secession also hosts contemporary exhibitions.
